Children's Books

We have a large library of books in  Portuguese for children. The books were donated by the Carvalho Family. We will be forever grateful to them.

Borrow for free to read with your kids at home  and help them keep the language fluency.

Season Two: a total of 5 events from September to November, 2016

Nov 19, 2016 - Theme: "Angola, África"

Portuguese is the official language of Angola, in the African Continent.The languages in Angola are those originally spoken by the different ethnic groups and Portuguese, introduced during the Portuguese colonial era. The most widely spoken indigenous languages are Umbundu, Kimbundu and Kikongo, in that order.Although the exact numbers of those fluent in Portuguese or who speak Portuguese as a first language are unknown, in 2014, a census carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Estatística in Angola mentions that 71.15% of the nearly 25.8 million inhabitants of Angola use Portuguese as a first or second language.

Activities in this event

Game: "O Mestre Mandou" - Santino Sierra, a SUNY student, plays this fun game with the children.

Reading: The SUNY students Matt Surface and Alexandra Agiliga and the volunteer Cecília Arsky read "Menina Bonita do Laço de Fita" (Ana Maria Machado).

Storytelling: "O Jacaré Bangão" - Nadia Abreu, a Master's student from the College of Saint Rose, tells us a traditional legend from her birthplace, in the African Continent, the city of Bengo, in Angola.

Nursery Rhyme: Nadia Abreu also teaches us to dance and sing this Angolan rhyme titled "Ngile".

Potluck: Participants bring and share traditional Brazilian snacks and drinks.

 

Nov 5, 2016 - Theme: "Bichos"

Activities in this event

Game: The SUNY student Sheylly Fleming plays a fun game with the children, titled "Find the Animal".

Reading: The SUNY student Dariel Nunez reads the book "Duda Bocuda" (André Vieira).

Singing: The SUNY student Geovanni Saget plays traditional Brazilian nursery rhymes on the guitar, and we all have fun singing and going ring around.

 

Oct 15, 2016 - Theme: "Dia da criança"

Activities in this event

Game: "Batata quente" - The SUNY student Dariel Nune plays this fun game with the children.

Nursery Rhyme: "Fui no Tororó" - The Volunteers Angela Barbosa and Lucia Arsky sing with the children this traditional Brazilian rhyme.

Reading: The SUNY student Santino Sierra reads "O Direito das Crianças" (Ruth Rocha).

Coloring: After coloring pictures the children build puzzles with them.

 

Oct 1st, 2016 - Theme: "A fruta preferida"

Activities in this event

Games: "Jogo das frutas" with Prof. Denise Osborne; "Tá Quente, Tá Frio" with the SUNY student Bárbara Carvalho; "Batata Quente" with the SUNY student Mônica Vitagllano.

Reading: The SUNY student Aniel Luna reads "Ana e as Frutas" (TurminhaDaNatureza.com.br)

Arts & Craft: "Telephone" with the volunteer Lúcia Arsky.

 

Sep 17, 2016 - Theme: "Independência"

The Brazilian flag is green, symbolic of Brazil's lush fields and forests. Its primary feature is a large yellow diamond, symbolic of Brazil's wealth in gold, and in its center floats a blue celestial globe.

Activities in this event

Game: "Batata Quente" - The SUNY students Sheylly Fleming and Monica Vitagllano play with the children.

Reading: The SUNY students Maria Gonzales and Alanis Gouvea read the book "Pedro e Tina" (Stephen Michael King) and perform reading interpretation with the group.

Drawing: and coloring the Brazilian flag.
